This year marks an important milestone for the Community Engaged Scholarship Institute (CESI), as our oldest program is celebrating its 10^th anniversary. The Research Shop is one of five programs through which CESI fulfills its mandate to bring together community and campus skills and resources in order to advance community-identified research goals. CESI works to enable deep collaboration with community groups, honour diverse forms and locations of knowledge, and support meaningful collaborations that increase our shared capacity to create high-impact research.

Sometimes local work gains global attention: this was the case last week when CESI’s Research Shop was invited to present the findings of a local project at the International Public Health Forum on Cannabis. The forum, organized by Quebec’s Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux, aimed to share knowledge and best practices related to preventing harm from cannabis use. The forum gathered experts from universities as well as health promotion and policy organizations from across the world.

For 10 years, the Community Engaged Scholarship Institute’s (CESI) Research Shop has trained graduate student researchers to work with community organizations, supporting them to design and implement research that addresses community-identified priorities. The Institute's partnership with 10C Shared Space has helped bring 139 campus events and meetings downtown over the past two years! Through this space-sharing agreement, the Institute aims to bridge the distance between our campus and community, and create space for proactive engagement of University students, staff and faculty with local organizations and the public.

University of Guelph researchers were recently granted nearly $4 million for new research projects from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. Congratulations!

When we think of children playing, our minds often go to memories of running to the nearest park, playground or swimming hole, exploring and interacting with the natural world. However, with growing urban development and screen-time becoming increasingly common, many children now have fewer opportunities to connect with nature.

As part of a newly formed UofG Engaged Learning Collective, CESI took part last week in the first in a series of Campus Community Partnership Conversations planned for the coming year. The event, which was hosted at 10C Shared Space, invited community groups, social innovators, small businesses, arts organizations, advocacy groups, social purpose initiatives, and those in science and technology to meet and chat with university staff from across campus who help to facilitate community-university partnerships.

The Research Shop is turning 10 years old! Founded in 2009 as part of the Community Engaged Scholarship Institute (CESI), the Research Shop works to meet the research priorities of local and regional community organizations. Over the past 10 years, the program has trained and employed 166 graduates students to work on various research activities and outputs that meet community needs first.
