A Year of Learning and Resilience: CESI's 2023 Impact

2022-2023 has been a year of learning, progress, and resilience at CESI. As we carry out our mandate to support community-university collaborations that strive to address community research priorities, our work continues to be most deeply focused on building capacity, supporting and carrying out community engaged research, and nurturing mutually-beneficial partnerships.

We have selected three projects that highlight how we work to meet these goals in a variety of ways – from engaging with issues like intimate partner violence and youth transitioning out of care to building capacity for up-and-coming researchers on campus. These project profiles emphasize how we weave community engagement and collaboration through all that we do, as well as the unique and wide-reaching impacts of CESI's work for faculty, students and staff members, collaborators and community organizations.

Making Connections Outside of Academic Silos

A new workshop series brought together graduate students from a variety of fields to learn about knowledge mobilization across disciplines. Participants saw how crossing disciplinary boundaries and engaging the public offer creative ways to address the complex problems the world faces today.

Centering Community Needs in Intimate Partner Violence Research

PhD student Laureen Owaga learned the value of practicing community engaged research during her practicum with the Woman Abuse Council of Toronto (ACT). Partnerships like this connect research to on-the-ground work for a tangible impact in the community.

Exploring New Ways to Support Marginalized Youth

In CESI's longtime partnership with Community Living Stratford, we have learned that youth with developmental disabilities don't necessarily feel welcome in the community engaged research process. Moving forward, we have to imagine new tools to support youth transitioning from child welfare to adult developmental services.
