Mavis Morton

Mavis is a faculty member in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and Director of First Year Seminars at the University of Guelph. She is a critical community engaged scholar and has worked for 25 years with rural and urban community partners including violence against women shelters, social and victim service agencies, correctional institutions and community coordinating committees on issues related to violence against women and other social justice issues. By working together with community partners and students, she helps to co-create and mobilize knowledge to address community identified priorities. Research collaborations often result in community-facing presentations, reports, literature reviews, protocols, infographics, social media campaigns, research tools and designs. In collaboration with community partners she integrates community engaged teaching and learning opportunities into all of her junior and senior undergraduate and graduate courses and thinks the best way to teach and train students in sociology is to work collaboratively on real world social problems. Part of Mavis’ research focuses on the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) and examines ways to improve student learning, the student and community partner experience, and educational quality. In 2014, the University of Guelph Faculty Association awarded her with the Distinguished Professor Award for Innovation in Teaching.
