Nishnawbe Aski Nation Food Self-Determination Project Documents Now Available
The Community Engaged Scholarship Institute (CESI) is excited to announce the release of project documents completed in partnership with the Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) to explore food self-determination in First Nation communities. The Nishnawbe Aski Nation represents 49 First Nations within Northern Ontario. The organization aims to encourage local self-determination of its communities while establishing social, cultural, spiritual, and economic independence.
Now available is a collection of literature reviews that explore the challenges and ongoing efforts to support food self-determination in First Nation communities. Topics include background information on food self-determination, the role of social enterprises, education programs for the community, and existing food systems. The reviews were created with the purpose of informing Nishnawbe Aski Nation communities of sustainable food strategies that honour the land, tradition, and available resources.
Also available is an infographic illustrating the spectrum of First Nations’ food self-determination activities. It explores the traditional practices, local production, imported food systems, and nutritional practices that are important to the food systems in First Nation communities.
