#BiteBack Social Media Takeover to Promote Awareness of Food Insecurity
Throughout March and April, CESI and Feeding 9 Billion's social media will be partially taken over to promote the #BiteBack Campaign. This initiative aims to promote education and awareness on the issue of food insecurity which is a significant problem facing many university students. The social media takeover is led by Mechaela Alfonso, a fourth-year Psychology student, and is a collaboration between Feeding 9 Billion and CESI’s Guelph Lab. Food insecurity is defined as limited or uncertain access to nutritionally adequate and safe foods or limited or uncertain ability to obtain acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways. For the next few weeks, CESI’s twitter and Feeding 9 Billions Instagram will have posts about different aspects of food insecurity and how it can impact different aspects of student life.
The #BiteBack campaign is part of the ongoing, collaborative work between CESI’s Guelph Lab and a variety of other partners to address food insecurity amongst university students. One of the most recent collaborative projects throughout March and April included an on-campus food market that provides students access to fresh affordable produce at the University of Guelph. The #BiteBack social media takeover will aim to address food insecurity by engaging with students and school organizations to increase awareness and promoting other community organizations working to alleviate the issue. The campaign emphasizes the importance of the community coming together to #BiteBack at food insecurity.
