We are pleased to share that CESI by the Numbers: Key Metrics 2019-2020 has been released and is now available! This document captures and highlights CESI's key impacts from May 2019 - April 2020. It is a summary of a larger, internal report on CESI's activities and impacts; the numbers presented were identified as being of particular interest by the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences. The metrics are separated into three categories: capacity development, partnerships, and research projects.

Theatre of the Beat’s Restorative Justice Theatre Program: Highlights from the Baseline Evaluation has successfully been published to Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Journal.

The report highlights the findings from the evaluation of Theatre of the Beat’s (TOTB) Restorative Justice Theatre Program, which works with incarcerated persons at the Grand Valley Institution for Women (GVIW), a federal prison in Kitchener, Ontario.

A recent community-engaged teaching and learning collaboration between the Guelph Black Heritage Society, U of G College of Arts, and CESI has been featured by CBC Kitchener Waterloo.

Meal Exchange (MX) is a national organization working with university students to ensure “Good Food For All” on Canadian campuses. CESI’s multi-year collaboration on food insecurity began with MX and one research project, and has since evolved to include new partners, new research, co-convening events, and advocacy efforts.

As many as 1 in 5 students studying at U of G may be experiencing food insecurity. That’s according to a team of researchers at the University of Guelph’s College of Applied Social and Human Sciences (CSAHS).

A recent letter to the editor written by Helen Doyle, Laura Minet, Evan Ferrari and Brianna Wilson in this week's GuelphToday sheds light on the social and environmental advantages of switching to electric vehicles.

Food insecurity is a major public health issue in Canada that impacts post-secondary students at a higher-than-average rate. Approximately 40% of post-secondary students have experienced some degree of food insecurity, with research showing that BIPOC students are especially at risk. Lack of financial access to nutritious, culturally-appropriate food adds an additional layer of worry and challenge for students experiencing food insecurity, particularly in light of the financial impacts of COVID-19. 

A key principle of community-engaged scholarship is that it addresses community-identified research priorities. This means that community members - rather than researchers - determine the goals of a research project to ensure its findings will be relevant to their needs. A recent partnership between the Community Engaged Scholarship Institute (CESI) and a group of developmental support service agencies demonstrates the strengths of this community-driven research approach.

CESI's Community Engaged Learning Course Support Fund is now open for Fall 2020!

We invite applications from faculty members/course instructors in the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences (CSAHS) who are integrating community engaged learning into their courses and have incurred additional costs as a result. Faculty members/course instructors may apply for up to $500 per academic year to cover eligible costs such as:

CESI is collaborating with the Ontario Agri-Food Innovation Alliance and the Research Innovation Office to bring Skills for Research Impact to the University of Guelph. This five-session workshop series is open to U of G faculty, staff, and graduate students who are interested in enhancing the impact of their research.
